Russell L. Brandenburg, 92, of Muncie, passed away on Friday, December 7, 2012. He was born on July 1, 1920, to Hobart and Mary Brandenburg. He was an avid collector of stamps as well as Betty Boop collectibles. Russell always seemed to have a smile on his face, and he enjoyed watching sports and westerns. He loved his family and dogs. Russell was preceded in death by his parents; 1st wife, Bernice Brandenburg; 2nd wife, Lottie May Brandenburg; son, Russell L. Brandenburg, Jr.; brother, Earl Brandenburg; and grandson, Jeffrey Ratliff. Willie Choate
Willie A. Choate, 82, of Muncie, passed away Monday, December 10, 2012 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. Willie was born February 22, 1930 in Fentress County, Tennessee. He was a United States Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He worked for 25 years at Dayton Walters before he retired. He was a member of Fairlawn Church of Christ for over 30 years. Willie enjoyed working with his hands such as whittling and fixing things. He also enjoyed mowing his lawn and spending time with his family. Willie is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sarah Choate; two children, Donna Jones (husband Robert) of Muncie and Tonyia Gonzalez (husband Steve) of Lansing, MI; three grand children, Sarah Jackson (husband Mike) of Muncie, William Jones (wife Erica) of Muncie, and Mary Rutherford (husband Spencer) of Kansas; six grandchildren; two brothers; five sisters; and several nieces and nephews. Willie was preceded in death by his Parents, Hopkin Choate and Pearl Smith; and a sister. Marie (Donovan) Harshman, 92, of Muncie, was called home to be with our Lord on Monday, December 10, 2012. She was born on November 14, 1920, in Wilcox, Pennsylvania, to the late Clarence and Mary (Pavlina) Donovan. Marie was a graduate of Yorktown High School. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Robert Harshman of Muncie; daughter, Mary Ellen Cox (husband: Paul) of Yorktown; grandson, Kelby Johnson (wife: Gretchen) of Seattle, WA; great granddaughter, Makena Johnson; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Joetta Standafer, 77, of Muncie, passed away Friday morning, December 14, 2012 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. Joetta was born October 14, 1935 in Lancaster, Kentucky to the late Homer and Nan Ray. She graduated from Connersville High School and worked as a telephone operator for many years. She also worked as a Doctor’s Secretary at Richmond Hospital. She was a longtime member of Full Gospel Temple Church. She was also an activist for the Muncie Fire Department after her husband was killed in the line of duty. She was an avid mall walker and enjoyed spending time with her family. Joetta is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Privett of Muncie; two grandchildren, Jeramie Privett (wife Amber) of Anderson and Jamie Privett of Muncie; two great-grandchildren, Cayla and Sam of Anderson. Joetta was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard Standafer, in 1986; her son, Stephen Standafer; and a great-grandson, Jacob Privett. Paula Tripp, 88, of Muncie, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. Paula was born October 2, 1924 in Munich, Germany to the late Johann and Rosina Junker. She graduated from High School in Munich Germany and came to the United States in 1948. She became a United States citizen on January 25, 1966. Paula worked as a sales clerk at Haags Drug Store and had also worked for Owens Illinois here in Muncie. She enjoyed ice skating and dancing in her younger years. She also enjoyed spending time with her family. Paula is survived by five children, Gerald Henderson (wife Karen) of Muncie, Debbie Barker (husband David) of Muncie, Paula Smith (husband Rod) of Muncie, Robert Snodgrass of Munich Germany, and Gerd Wottowa (wife Uttah) of Spain; ten grandchildren, Michele Hicks (husband Steve) of Sellersburg, IN, Kimberly Hash of Greenwood, Jonathan Jinks (wife Tonya) of Muncie, Jerry Jinks of Muncie, Jerrod Henderson of Muncie, Pam McKibben (husband Ron) of Ft. Wayne, Jill Phillips (husband Sergio) of Muncie, Beth Corey (husband Brian) of Whiteland, Allan Henderson (wife Julie) of Muncie, and Keith Smith of Florida; 21 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Muncie, IN.-Ralph Ettel, 86, of Muncie, passed away peacefully Friday, January 4, 2013 following an extended illness. Ralph was born September 2, 1926 in Jeffersonville, In. to the late Henry and Alice (Mc Cammon) Ettel. On March 1, 1949 in Jeffersonville, In. Ralph married Ruth Roberts she passed July 18, 1987. Ralph retired when he was 58 from Marsh Foods in Yorktown, In. Ralph was a decorated WW II Navy veteran. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, the American Legion post #19, the D.A.V., Eagles Lodge #231, and a former member of the V.F.W. Ralph is survived by his son and daughter inlaw Larry (Nancy) Ettel of Muncie, IN., daughter Karen Berrier of Muncie, IN., grandson Air Force Tech. Sargent Scott (Kara) Berrier of Vilonia, AR., granddaughter Dawn (Brent) Streeter of Cordova, TN., four great- grandchildren Tyler, Noah, Emily Berrier, Riley Streeter, one sister Shirley Pickering of Muncie, IN., and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Don Sutton
Don L. Sutton, 86, of Chesterfield, Indiana, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Middletown. Don was born December 31, 1926 in Muncie, Indiana to the late Leroy and Iva Sutton. He was a 1947 graduate of Cowan High School. He went on to serve as a Corporal in the United States Army serving in Yokahama, Japan during WWII where he earned the Good Conduct Metal. He worked as a self-employed farmer for over 50 years and also drove a school bus for 37 years. He was a member of the Daleville Masonic Lodge for nearly 50 years. He was also a member of the Bethany Christian Church. Don is survived by his loving wife of nearly 62 years, Janet Sutton; their two children, Bruce Sutton (wife Cathy) of Middletown and Kent Sutton (wife Jan) of Pendleton; a sister, Doris Chastain (husband Curt) of Yorktown; four grandchildren, Linnae Sutton, Ryan Sutton (wife Melanie), Matt Sutton, and Karly Sutton (fiancé Chase Warner); two great-grandchildren, Aaron Sutton and Alison Sutton; a special friend, Iva Mae McKinney; and several nieces and nephews. Lee Shank
Lee R. Shank, 96, of Muncie, passed away Wednesday, January 09, 2013 at Elmcroft Senior Living. Lee was born November 26, 1916 in Farmland, Indiana to the late Roy and Harriett Shank. He Graduated from Farmland High School in 1934 and went on to serve in the United States Air Corp during WWII on the 94th Bomb Group. Lee married Frances Miller on May 31, 1941 and was happily married for over 50 years before her death in 1992. Lee worked in commercial construction for Geupel-DeMars Construction. He built the Athletic Building for DePauw University, The Indianapolis Children’s Museum, along with many others. Lee was a member of the High Street United Methodist Church, The Farmland Masonic Lodge, and the Carpenters Union. He enjoyed hunting and fishing for small mouth bass. Lee is survived a son, Michael Shank (wife Diana) of Muncie; two granddaughters, Amy L. Bultemeyer (husband Dean) of Fishers and Jennifer J. Parsons (husband Jerry) of Ft. Wayne; four great-grandchildren, Zachery Parson, Audie Parsons, Nolan Parsons, and Conrad Bultemeyer; and several nieces and nephews. Lee was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Shank; his second wife, Maxine Shank; an Infant son, David Eugene Shank; brother, Joseph Shank; and sister, Martha Cook. A funeral service to celebrate Lee’s life will be 3:00pm Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 W. Kilgore Ave, Muncie, with Pastor Charlotte Overmyer officiating and military honors conducted by the Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard. Cremation will follow with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery in Farmland at a later date. Dale Louis Bartels, 87, of Farmland, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at his daughter’s home in Kokomo, Indiana. Dale was born January 29, 1925 in Manley, Iowa to the late Otto and Edna Bartels. He was a United States Army Veteran serving on the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagle during WWII as a paratrooper where he parachuted into combat during the Battle of The Bulge in Bastogne, Belgium. He worked for Kirkland Corp as a millwright / welder, traveling all over the country. Dale is survived by two children, Pam Rauhe (husband Frank) of Salem, MO and Dale L. Bartels II (wife Gwinn) of Albany, IN; five step-children, David Spoonemore (wife Lorri) of Kokomo, Denny Spoonemore of Beaver Creek, OH, Mike Spoonemore (wife Karen) of Indianapolis, Tim Patton of Farmland, and Linda Wagner of Meza, AZ; He is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Bartels, in 2008; a son, Steven Bartels, and four siblings. Carolyn Jean (Chesterman) Cline, 78, lifelong resident of Muncie, passed away on Friday, January 11, 2013, with her family by her side. She was born on December 30, 1934, to Joseph “Joe” and Nan (Smullen) Chesterman in Muncie, Indiana. She was known to others as, “Care,” because of her love of family, friends, and others. She was a graduate of Muncie Central High School, graduating with the class of 1953. Carolyn worked at the Muncie Clinic until it closed, working as a billing and administrative clerk. She later retired from Ball Memorial Hospital in December of 2004. She helped serve the medical community for 30 years. Carolyn was a member of the Moose Lodge, White Shrine, Eastern Star, and the Eagles. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Kimberly L. Crisp; and a brother, Jack Chesterman. She is survived by a loving family consisting of her sisters, Janet Young of Anderson, Linda (Charles) Chesterman-Oakes of Florence, KY; sister-in-law, Ardith Chesterman; nieces and nephews, Sharon (Doug) Meece of Yorktown, Terry (Nicki) Young of Anderson, Rick (Stefanie) Young of Yorktown, April (John) Stinson of Yorktown, David (Stacey) Chesterman of Yorktown, Nichole (Al) Castillo of Erlanger, KY; great nieces and nephews, Jennifer (Nathan) Cooper, Mackie Meece, Lynette Meece, Clay Stinson, Joe Chesterman, Jack Stinson, Olivia Chesterman, and Samantha Stinson. Mark D. Mays, 58, of Muncie, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2013. He was born on October 31, 1954, to James and Gertrude (McCarthy) Mays in Elwood, Indiana. He graduated from Richmond High School with the class of 1972. He was on the high school swim team, and served as a lifeguard at the Richmond City Pool. Mark served in the United States Army from 1972-1974 during Vietnam. He married the love of his life, Lisa Mays, on August 5, 1977. Mark continued his education at Ball State University where he graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor’s degree in education. He was employed with Ivy Tech Community College in Muncie, where he taught mathematics courses. Mark was an avid horse racing fan, and at one point was part owner of a racing horse. He had a great sense of humor, was fun loving, and a family man. He was preceded in death by his son, Kenton Steven Mays; grandparents, Frank and Gertrude McCarthy, Glen and Clara Mays; and a cousin, Leslie McCarthy. Mark is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Lisa Mays of Muncie; his parents of Richmond; daughter, Jesseca (Brian Conley) Mays of Muncie; siblings, James (Lucy) Mays of Fairfax, VA, Stephen (Peggy) Mays of Oxford, OH, Suanna (Michael) Ponder of Richmond, Joseph Mays of Louisville, KY; grandson, Sebastian Lee Mays of Muncie; and several nieces and nephews. Linda Lee Nease, 63, of Muncie, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013 at The Waters of Yorktown Health Care Facility. Linda was born January 29, 1949 in Muncie to the late Lee and Betty Moore. She graduated from Center High School and attended Purdue University. Linda was a seamstress and had owned the Alteration Shop where she loved custom sewing and design and helping her customers and friends in any way possible. She participated in 4-H Horse and Pony and enjoyed spending time with her family. Linda is survived by her two sons, Tyler Nease (girlfriend Michele Kelly) of Indianapolis and Yancy Nease (wife Laura Hansen) of San Diego, CA; and four grandchildren, Victoria Nease, Kyle Nease, David Nease, and Alex Davis. Linda was preceded in death by a son, Chad Nease; and her brother, Marshall Moore. Harriet E. Rogers, 90, of Daleville, passed away Monday, January 21, 2013 at Community Hospital in Anderson. Harriet was born September 30, 1922 in Battle Creek, Michigan to the late Earl and Jesse Kent. She graduated from Battle Creek High School and attended Michigan State University. Harriet was a homemaker and also assisted her husband, Grover, at Ballard and Shirey Funeral Home where he was a funeral director and they lived upstairs. She was a member of the Daleville Christian Church, the C.W.F. (Christian Women’s Fellowship), and was a Lioness with the Daleville Lions Club. She enjoyed reading, knitting, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Harriet is survived by two children, Cathy Gilliam (husband Tom) of Anderson, and Dennis Rogers (wife Janet) of Muncie; four grandchildren, Thad Gilliam (wife Wendy), Robyn Johnson (husband Wes), Lisa Rogers, and Stacey Osborn (husband Greg); six great-grandchildren, Camden Gilliam, Carson Gilliam, Avery Johnson, Madalyn Johnson, Audrey Osborn, and Max Osborn; along with several nieces and nephews. Harriet was preceded in death by her loving husband of nearly 50 year, Grover Rogers, in 1991; and two brothers and one sister. Daisy Boles
Daisy D. Boles, 99, passed away Friday, February 22, 2013 at Golden Living Center. She was born on Monday, October 13, 1913 in Lafayette, the daughter of Wallace “Pop” and Eva (Stephenson) Wren. Daisy was a homemaker, enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing bingo, snacking, watching ice skating and was an avid Indiana Pacers and Reggie Miller fan. On the weekends, she liked playing Rummy with her granddaughters. Above all, she loved babysitting and caring for others, a trait that touched the lives of many throughout her years. Daisy was a strong Christian woman who was devout in her faith and read the Bible daily. She was also a member of the Church of Christ and Christian Union. Survivors include two granddaughters, Tammy Kidd (companion, Chuck Bowden), Muncie, and Kari Lee, Virginia. She also leaves to cherish her memory the many children she cared for throughout the years. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Ralph Boles. Services will be held2:00p.m. Monday, February 25, 2013 at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 W. Robert J. McGunegill, 70, of Selma, Indiana passed away Monday, February 18, 2013 at I.U. Ball Memorial Hospital, following a sudden illness. Robert was born December 11, 1942 in Selma, Indiana to the late John and Elva (Claspell) McGunegill. He married the love of his life Phyllis A. Dailey on November 10, 1972 in Delaware County. Robert retired in 1995 from the Muncie Police Department after 27 years protecting our community. He was an avid marksman, an animal lover and especially loved his beloved rabbit “Muffin”. He loved to travel with his wife Phyllis. Robert was a member of the F.O.P. of Muncie; he was also on the Selma Town Board and the Regional Waste Water District Commission. Robert is survived by his wife Phyllis of Selma, IN., son Kenny (Kim) Linn of Eaton, IN., daughters Amy McGunegill of Tennessee, Lisa (Dan) Eubanks of Middletown, IN., brothers James (Beverly) Wagner, Gerald (Millie) Wagner, all of Muncie, IN, daughter-In-Law Cindy Linn, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, Sister- in -law Bonnie Dailey Chesterton OH, Brother- in -Law Gary Dailey ,Anderson IN and several nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Jeff Linn. A funeral service to celebrate Robert’s life will be 1:00pm Friday, February 22, 2013 at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 West Kilgore Ave. Muncie, with Pastor Steven Dugger officiating. Entombment will follow in Elm Ridge Memorial Park. Family and friends may gather to share and remember two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Virginia Strohm
Virginia E. Strohm, age 87, of Muncie, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on Saturday, February 16, 2013, after an extended illness. She was born on November 4, 1925, in Cowan, Indiana, to the late Irl and Oletha (Kress) Oxley. She graduated from Cowan High School with the class of 1943. Virginia married the love of her life, Robert Strohm, on October 26, 1944; he preceded her in death. She worked for First Merchants Bank, formerly Merchants National Bank, for 26 years. She was a selfless individual who loved her family and friends. Virginia was a longtime member of Community United Church of Christ until its closing, and attended Westminster Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her three children, LeEllen McCrory (husband, Michael) of Fishers, Celeste Foley (husband, Tim) of Muncie, Bradley Strohm (wife, Lynn) of Daleville; grandchildren, Aaron Reid (wife, Cheryl), April Clark (husband, Craig), Trevor Foley (wife, Rabita), Kinsey Corbett (husband, Logan), Tiffiany Heaston (husband, Jerry), Candy Horsley (husband, Randy), Katie Morales (husband, Jose), Adam Strohm; step-grandchildren, Sue Godfrey (husband, Stuart), Pat McCrory (wife, Lezlie), Bob McCrory (wife, Jen), John McCrory (wife, Melissa); 17 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Norma Oxley of Daleville; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to especially thank Dr. Joseph Spahr and the staff at the IU Health Cancer Center for their compassion and care given to Virginia. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 W. Kilgore Avenue, Muncie. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 21, 2013, at the funeral home with Dr. Gary Cox officiating. Entombment will follow in the Elm Ridge Memorial Park mausoleum.
