Charles Stewart
Charles Norman Stewart, Sr., 83, of Muncie, died Thursday evening, November 20th, 2014 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. He was born August 7th, 1931 in Muncie, and was the son of the late William Ira & Mildred (Moore) Stewart. Charles loved to fish, hunt, and go camping. He was a member of the Labors Union, and had worked for Miller Pipeline. Charles proudly and honorably served his country during the Korea Conflict in the United States Navy. He was a member of the Moose Lodge. Charles is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Nancy Kathryn (Moss) Stewart of Muncie; two sons, Charles Norman Stewart, Jr. (Lisa) of Muncie, and Michael Lee Stewart (Rebecca) also of Muncie; three daughters, Denise Lynn Millsaps (Clyde) of Muncie, Lorrie Potter (Kenneth) of Jamestown, TN, and Michele Lea Stewart of Muncie; eleven grandchildren, Ashee Bane of Muncie, Eric Millsaps (Emily) of Arcadia, IN, Jeremy Millsaps (Angela) of Muncie, Gary Minnick of Muncie, Nancy Minnick of Jamestown, TN, Kenneth Potter (Jessica) of Jamestown, TN, Kristen Stewart of Muncie, Corey Walker of Muncie, Jaron Jackson of Muncie, Jeffery Jackson, Jr. of Muncie, and Hadessah Jackson of Muncie; fifteen great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Bob Stewart, Fred Stewart, Jackie Stewart, and Guy Holmes. Funeral Services for Charles will be held, Tuesday, November 25th, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Garden View Funeral Home, with Pastor Glenn Greiner officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, with military honors being conducted by the United States Navy, and the Delaware County Honor Guard. Nick Fullhart
Nick L. Fullhart, age 73, of Muncie, IN passed away on Friday November 28, 2014 at his residence after his brave battle with ALS. He was born in Delaware County on July 15, 1941, and was the son of Gilbert Omar and Helen Louise (Wood)Fullhart. Nick was an area long resident and graduated from Albany High School with the Class of 1959, where he enjoyed participating in sports and made many lifelong friends. Nick spent his career in manufacturing, working at Ontario Corp. for 20 years, Imperial Cabinets, then retiring from Sermatech Aeroforge. He lived life to the fullest and will be remembered for his quick wit, generous nature, and being a great storyteller. He loved the outdoors, spending time fishing in Canada with friends and family, fly fishing in Colorado, golf (having a hole in one), and helping at his brother’s Christmas tree farm during the holidays. Nothing compared to spending time with his daughter’s family. He couldn’t get enough of his grandchildren and enjoyed going to their activities. Nick is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Joyce; daughter Jennifer (Mike) Bavender; grandchildren Grace and Jake of Fishers, IN; mother and step-father Louise (Don) Owen of Muncie; brother Dr. Ted (Connie) Fullhart of Yorktown; sisters Patty (Dennis) Knott of Fort Myers, Fla., Susie Dye of Muncie, and Donna (Greg) Cline of Torrington, WY; sister-in-law Marjorie Miller of Portland; brother-in-laws Duane (Lois) Anderson of Orlando, Fla. And Galen (Rose) Anderson of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Omar Fullhart; sister-in-law Rosi Fullhart; brother-in-laws Joe Dye and Jay Miller; and father and mother-in-laws Bud and Elizabeth Gutshall. Visitation will be held on Thursday December 4, 2014 from 12:00-2:00pm at Garden View Funeral Home 10501 N. Indiana 3, Muncie. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 pm at the funeral home. Charles Parsons
Charles Everett Parsons, 95, of Eaton, died early Thursday morning, December 4th, 2014 at The Golden Living Center in Muncie. He was born September 13th, 1919 in rural Owen County, IN and was the son of the late Robert Charles & Hettie (Hendershot) Parsons. Charles was a resident of Delaware County since 1936, he moved to Delaware County as a teenager with his family and attended and graduated from Daleville High School. He married Garnet Marie Musselman on July 16th, 1942. Charles proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Army during the European Theater during WWII from 1942-1945. Upon his return from active duty he was employed by Riggin Dairy. Charles was a farmer and contractor; he bought a farm in Niles Township in 1949 and raised dairy and beef cows, chickens and hogs. As a contractor he built many houses in Winwood Addition and several in Eden Park. He worked on the construction and design on the covered bridge between Garden View Funeral Home and Gardens of Memory Cemetery; he was very proud of the covered bridge. Charles was a member of the Eden Church, long time Farm Bureau Member, and served on the Delaware Community School Corporation Board from 1972-1978. He was a very creative and precise wood craftsman. Charles is survived by his four children, Marily McKinley (Dick) of Canfield, OH, John Parsons (Karen) of Muncie, Dale Parsons (Leila) of Dunkirk, and Carol Sheley (Michael) of Goshen, IN; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Carl Parsons of Muncie, Fred Parsons of Muncie, and Raymond Parsons (Mary) of Muncie; several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Garnet Parsons in September of 2013; three sisters, Josephine Clevenger, Dorothy Leake, and Ruth Vanderburg; two brothers Paul and Perry Parsons. Funeral Services for Charles will be held Tuesday, December 9th, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Eden Church, 11205 North STRD 3, Muncie, IN 47303, with Pastor James Behrendt officiating. Burial will follow with military honors being conducted by the United States Army and the Delaware County Honor Guard in Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Roselee Williams
Roselee Williams, 95, of Muncie, died Thursday afternoon, December 4th, 2014 at Signature Health Care. She was born August 23rd, 1919 in Gilmer, West Virginia, and was the daughter of the late Lee & Rhoda (Stout) Delaney. Roselee was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great, great grandmother. She was a member of Old Town Hill Baptist Church. Roselee enjoyed making crafts; she retired in 1984 from Ball State University in Environmental Services. She worked for Glen L. Martin Airplane Factory in Baltimore Maryland, she was always proud of helping build the airplanes for WW II, there she was known as “ Rosie the Riveter”. Roselee is survived by her three children; Randolph Williams, Jr. (Joyce) of Monticello, IN, Sharen Garton (Harold) of Muncie, and Charlotte Middleton (Richard) of Muncie; five grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren; a brother Jessie Delaney (Grace) of Browntown, WVA; two sisters, Lucille Vanderpool of St. Petersburg, FL, and Bonnie Butler of Parkersburg, WVA, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Randolph Williams, Sr. in 2002; a grandchild, three sisters and five brothers. Funeral Services for Roselee will be held Monday, December 8th, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. at Garden View Funeral Home, with Pastor Bruce Reynolds officiating. Robert McVey
Robert was born February 12, 1916, in Fleming County, Kentucky to the late Bertie and Annie McVey. He was a United States Army Veteran serving during WWII. He retired after 30 years of employment from Delco Battery of Muncie in 1976. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed history. Robert is survived by four children, Naomi Cook of Muncie, Roy McVey (wife Mildred) of Marion, Bennie McVey (wife Mary) of Fayetteville, AR, and Myrtle Stanford of Lake Wales, FL; seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Robert is preceded in death by his wife in 1998, after 65 years of marriage, Vernie McVey; a granddaughter, two sisters, and one brother. A funeral service to celebrate Robert’s life will be 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 6, 2014, at Garden View Funeral Home, 10501 N. State Road 3, Muncie, Indiana. Treva A. Hillman 84, of Springport died Sunday, December 7, 2014 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, Indiana. She was born September 23, 1930 in Woodbury, TN and was the daughter of Joseph and Edna (Moyer) Bush. She had been a resident of this area since the 1950’s. She was a homemaker and a member of Springport Christian Church. Treva is survived by two sons, Dewey Jr Hillman (wife Sharon) of Mt. Summit and Joseph A. Hillman (wife Lisa) of Middletown, IN, one daughter, Deborah E McGee (husband Paul ) of New Castle, IN, two sisters, Daisy Markum of Muncie and Zelpha Earls (husband Bonnell) of Glendale, Arizona, seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Dewey J. Hillman, her sister, Gertrude Taylor, and two brothers, Alden and Ralph Bush. The Rev. Donald Ray Burks, 76, of Muncie, died Saturday afternoon, December 6th, 2014 at Millers Merry Manor in Hartford City. He was born January 30th, 1938 in Michie, TN, and was the son of the late Willis & Beatrice (Marlar) Burks. Donald was an avid hunter, whom enjoyed watching sports and playing cards. He retired from Marhoefer Meat Packing Plant. Donald is survived by his four daughters; Deanna Stonebraker (Harold) of Muncie, Donna Burks (Wes Davis) of Muncie, Denise Norris (Bobby) of Hartford City, and Michelle Bailey (Glenn) of Albany; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; two brothers James Burks of PA, and Robert Burks (Martha) of TN; a sister Betty Johnson (Elbert) of MS. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Wilma in 2000; and three brothers Billy, Wayne, and Gordon Burks. Earnie Marie Holliday, 85, of Muncie, died Wednesday evening, December 10th, 2014 at her residence. She was born September 11th, 1929 in Monticello, KY, and was the daughter of the late Albert & Girty (Foster) Dobbs. Earnie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, camping, reading, shopping, and going to church. Earnie retired from Woodlawn Nursing Home. Earnie is survived by her two children; Charles David Holliday and Ann Marie Couch (Willie) both of Muncie; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren; a sister Ellamae Holliday (Gene) of Muncie; sister-in-law Louise Dobbs of Muncie; special friends Weda Purneil, Brenda Workman, Eva Smith, and Berenice . In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Clarence; two sisters Alta Lewis and Nellie Meyers; a brother Stanley Dobbs. Norma Besser
MUNCIE – Norma Lee (Lambert) Besser, 78, of Muncie, IN, died after an extended illness on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at Golden Living Center in Muncie, IN. Norma was born on June 27, 1936 at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, IN and was the daughter of Oren B. and Sara A. (Chalfant) Lambert. She was a 1954 graduate of Gaston High School. After high school she married the love of her life and started a family. She started working in the cafeteria at Harrison Elementary and Wes-Del High School for a time. When Westminster Village Retirement Center opened their doors, she began working in the kitchen and then transitioned to the front desk where she worked for 28+ years before retiring in 1998. Norma was always the go to lady, at Westminster, always willing to help when and wherever it was needed. Norma was an excellent cook and seamstress, making everything from coats to crafty sweatshirts to baking the best homemade bread. She loved anything that occupied her hands. She also enjoyed traveling, knitting and crocheting (her specialties included baby booties, slippers and jewelry). Norma was an avid gardener and it showed by all the beautiful flowers they had in their yard every year. Norma really loved spending time with her grandchildren and watching all their sporting events. Norma is survived by her husband of 60 years Eddie, 2 Sons, Randy (Lynn) Besser, Fayetteville, NC; David (Bonnie) Besser, Gaston, IN; 3 Daughters, Judy (Tom) Taylor, Martinez, GA; Jayne (Dan) McColm, Gaston, IN; Rhonda (Brooks) Biggs, Ft Wayne, IN; One Sister, Margery (Ray) LeBon, Gaston, IN. Hazel Sorrell
Hazel Sorrell of Muncie – a beloved and special wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to many – passed away early Thursday morning at Bethel Point Health and Rehabilitation Center, where she had been living for the past year. She was born Hazel McIntosh on Jan. 23, 1933, in Boonville, Ky., to Alfred and Minnie Mosley McIntosh. She lived and worked several years in Winchester, Ky., and Middletown, Ohio, before marrying Silas Dawson Sorrell on Feb. 27, 1954. They would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary this coming year. She and Silas built a beautiful and lasting life together with their six children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was a fabulous cook, enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and always had a big smile and wonderful hug for anyone she knew. In her spare time, she loved to support her children’s and grandchildren’s many activities and sports, shop, play bingo, go dancing, travel, spend time at Big Turkey Lake and enjoy eating out with family and friends. She and Silas also enjoyed camping and traveled to Canada and Wisconsin on fishing trips. She worked for many years in Muncie, retiring in 1998 from Alltrista Corp., formerly Ball Corp. Prior to Alltrista, she had worked at Wise Food Market for many years and also at Kroger/Ross Supermarket in Muncie, The Big Wheel Restaurant and other area restaurants. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge #231 and was a union steward while employed at Alltrista. She is survived by the love of her life, Silas Sorrell of Muncie; five children: Donna (husband: David) Penticuff of Marion, Michael (Becky Mayer) Sorrell of Indianapolis, James (wife: Deanna) Sorrell of Yorba Linda, Calif., and Cheryl (husband: Tony) Reynolds and Gregory (wife: Debra) Sorrell, all of Muncie. One daughter, Karen (Tom Faulkner) Hathaway, passed away in January. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Paul (wife: Sabra) Douglas, Adam (wife: Christy) Douglas, Amanda Hathaway, Alyssa Sorrell and Tyler Reynolds, all of Muncie; Emily (husband: Tim) Richardson, Pikeville, Ky.; Shannon Sorrell, Indianapolis, and Ian and Darren Sorrell, both of Yorba Linda, Calif. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Lynley and Myla Douglas, Alex Stevens and Isaac Douglas, all of Muncie. Calling will be 3-7 p.m. Sunday and 2-3 p.m. Monday at Garden View Funeral Home, Muncie. The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Monday with Revs. Roger and Maureen Walby officiating. Loretta May (Baker) Vance, 73, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2014 at her home in Muncie, Indiana. Loretta was born November 3, 1941 in Cleveland, OH to the late Shirley and Audrey Baker. Loretta was a homemaker who was dedicated and loyal to her children and grandchildren and she loved her dogs. She attended Southside Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed theaters and plays and her trips to the casino. She was also an avid reader. Loretta is survived by seven children, Jerry Vance (Deana May) of Muncie, Karen Harrington (Tony Tutterow)of Muncie, Sara Harrington (Jack Meadows) of Muncie, Douglass Harrington of Muncie, Kimber Vance of Muncie, Betty Neeley (Richard) of Winchester, and Tina Wilson (Jim) of Parker City; two brothers, William E. Baker and John Baker; and two sisters, Mary and Shirley; a very dear and special friend, Carol Mays of Muncie; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, Amil Vance; and a daughter, Gloria Harrington. A funeral service to celebrate Loretta’s life will be 1:00 P.M. John Lewis Anderson, 59, passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at his home in Muncie surrounded by his family. John was born October 23, 1955 in Muncie to the late Donald and Lola Anderson. He graduated from South Side High School in 1975. He worked for Al Pete Meats for 33 years. He then worked for Muncie Meats retiring earlier this year. John was a homebody who enjoyed watching westerns and loved spending time with his family. John is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Anderson; two daughters, Mindy Commiskey (husband Ryan) of Tijeras, NM and Kristy Anderson of Flagstaff, AZ; three step-children, Kelsey Abner of Ft. Wayne, Adam Abner (wife Lisa) of Anderson, and Matt Abner of Muncie; a step-granddaughter, Aria Abner of Anderson; two brothers, Jeff Anderson (wife Rachel) of Muncie and Ron Anderson (wife Jeannie) of Muncie; a sister, Donna Cross (husband Ed) of Michigan; and several nieces and nephews. George Loughery
George H. Loughery, age 89, of Tucker, Ga., died Christmas Day, December 25, 2014. Born in Indianapolis on March 1, 1925, he grew up in Robinson, IL, graduating from IU in 1947. He worked 42 years with the Ball Corp. starting in 1947 as a retail salesman. He continued in sales for 42 years moving several times and transferred to Atlanta in 1984 where he retired in 1990. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed all types of sports and reading. He was so proud of his grandsons, Sam and Seth and was very active in their activities. Survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Marsha (Hudson) of Atlanta, sons, David Loughery (Mel) of Los Angeles, William (Trish) Loughery, daughter and fiance, Amy Loughery and Bill Houghton of St. Pete Beach, grandson and daughter, Jack and Cate Loughery of St. Pete, step daughter, Rhonda Gregson, grandsons, Seth and Sam Gregson of Atlanta. Sam and Seth were his pride and joy. He was very involved in all their activities. He was predeceased by his parents, brother and a sister. Whenever someone met him, they would comment on what a nice person he was. He never met a stranger and was liked by everyone who met him. He spoke badly of no one. Rosella Simmons
Rosella June Simmons, 81, of Muncie, passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 24, 2014, at Elm Croft Senior Living. Rosella was born August 23, 1933 in Muncie to the late Chester and Ruby Coates. She graduated from Royerton High School in 1951. While in high school, she served as a Candy Striper at Ball memorial Hospital. Rosie was also a Royerton Cheerleader. Rosie married her husband, Jesse Simmons, on October 14, 1951. They were married for 55 years before Jesse passed away in 2007. Rosie worked in the Wes-Del Cafeteria for 21 years. She was known for her positive greetings to the students. She also worked at Weight Watchers for several years. After retirement, she volunteered at Ball Memorial Hospital and Minnetrista Center. Rosie was a beautiful seamstress and loved to cook for her family. She passed these skills and interests on to her granddaughters. Rosie enjoyed being active well into her 70’s. She and Jess were avid walkers which led to her completing two Indy mini marathons. She also rode her bike with Jess and she loved spending time at her lake cottage in Wolcottville, IN. She and Jess also enjoyed camping. Rosie was a loving and devoted grandmother. She enjoyed her 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She and Jess traveled to Jay County, Pendleton, and Woodstock, Georgia in order to spend time with her grandchildren. They especially enjoyed watching their grandchildren’s sporting activities. It seems fitting that Rosie passed away during the Christmas season because she loved Christmas and each grandchild was able to make a ginger bread house at Christmas. Rosie is survived by five children, Debbie King of Fishers, Mike Simmons (wife Kay) of Woodstock, Ga, Alan Simmons (wife Mona) of Muncie, Dian Jewell (husband Tom) of Pendleton, and Denise Selvey (husband Lea) of Redkey; 15 grandchildren, Shauna Berglund (husband Derek), Eric King (wife Rebecca), Jessica Kist (husband Jonathon), Amanda Brown (husband Brandon), Zachary Simmons, Aaron Simmons, Kevin Simmons, Lauren Simmons, Allison Simmons, Lukas Green, Breanna Jewell, Jacob Jewell, Josh Selvey, Kristen Selvey, and Kyle Selvey; seven great-grandchildren, Morgan, Maddie, and Grant Berglund, Connor Bither, Avery, and Cason King, and Van Green; a sister, Marcelene Selvey; and a sister-in-law, Gladys Coates. Rosie was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Coates and Richard Coates. The family wishes to thank Elmcroft for the love and care they have provided Rosie for the past four years. Rosie is now free to enjoy her walks with Jesse again. A funeral service to celebrate Rosie’s life will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, December 29, 2014, at Garden View Funeral Home, 10501 N. Gordon Glaze
Gordon Earl Glaze, 59, of Fort Wayne, died Saturday evening, December 27th, 2014 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born July 3rd, 1955 in Muncie, and was the son of the late Mark & Mary (Webb) Glaze. Gordon was active in the Special Olympics and many workshops in Fort Wayne. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Gordon is survived by his beloved brothers and sisters, Edwin Glaze (Jo Ellen) of Muncie, Jeffery Glaze of Largo, IN, Karen Roysden (Danny) of Eaton, and Trina Green (Richard) of Muncie; special friends Bobby & Josh; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services for Gordon will be held Wednesday, December 31st, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Garden View Funeral Home, with Pastor Doug Lucy officiating. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Zena Burkholder
Zena R. Hiatt Burkholder, 95, of Punta Gorda, Florida died Saturday, December 27, 2014 at Tidwell Hospice, Port Charlotte, Florida. She was born February 9, 1919 in Yorktown, Indiana to the late Peachie and Leonard Hawthorn. Mrs. Burkholder moved to Punta Gorda in 1981 from Muncie, Indiana. She was a member of the Port Charlotte United Methodist Church. She is survived by her loving family, husband Roy E. Burkholder of Punta Gorda, who she married in 1990; two sons, Kenneth E. (Glenda Biegner ) Hiatt and Leonard R. (Kim ) Hiatt, both of Cape Coral, FL; step-sons, Fred (Connie) Burkholder of Cypress, California, David (Carol) Burkholder of Punta Gorda, FL and Keith (Dawn) Burkholder of Coppell, TX; 21 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Mrs. Burkholder was preceded in death by her first husband of 43 years, Kenneth E. Hiatt who died in 1982. Funeral Services for Mrs. Burkholder will be held Thursday, January 8th, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Garden View Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Lavina Johnson
Lavina Rosalie Johnson, 91, of Muncie, passed away into the open arms of her Heavenly Father for eternal rest on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. Rosalie was born May 9, 1923 in Blountsville, Indiana. She was the youngest daughter of the late Hayward and Etta Wiseman. She married J. Kemper Johnson on July 18, 1942 at Eden Church in Muncie, where she remained a life-long member. Rosalie helped her husband work on the family farm for many years while also raising three children. Rosalie was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her primary passion in life was caring for her family. She will be greatly missed by her loving family. She was an excellent cook, seamstress, and homemaker. She was also a talented water-color and oil painting artist. Rosalie is survived by her daughter, Charline Covert (husband Dennis) of Ft. Wayne; two sons, Alan Johnson (wife Betty) of Muncie and Dr. J. Martin Johnson (wife Vicky) of Mount Vernon, Iowa; six grandchildren, Jennifer DePew (husband Joseph) of Atlanta, GA, Larissa Brown (husband David) of Ft. Wayne, Emily Sharpe (husband Stephen) of Canton, NC, Evan Johnson of Muncie, Brian Johnson of Mount Vernon, and Michelle Reimers (husband John) of Lakewood, CO; and four great-grandchildren, Elaina Brown, Marley Sharpe, Alexander DePew, and Emma Reimers. Rosalie was preceded in death by her husband, J. Kemper Johnson, in 1998; twin brothers, Gene and Jack Wiseman; sisters, Mary Horn and Naomi Short; and many dogs, the most recent, her beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Hannah.
